Participation, ideation and inclusion: technology co-design process involving people with intellectual disabilities
Rosario Muñoz Araya, Katherine Exss Cid
Most of the methods more commonly employed in ideation or codesign processes are not cognitively available for the elderly and those with intellectual disabilities. In order to create the possibilities of participation that take into account such groups, we need to rethink our design methods and processes, so overcoming the obstacles preventing the participation of these populations. The following talk will introduce an inclusive research process undertaken in 2020, within the framework of the FONDECYT research project New Education Challenges in Chile: aiding the independent living of intellectually or developmentally disabled adults. The study experience will be presented by means of PiX (interaction patterns) as an accessible codesign method, with the purpose of co-creating technological aids for intellectually disabled adults in Chile to live independently. This talk will go in-depth into the importance of listening to intellectually disabled communities in order to bring new points of view into design processes, heading towards the co-creation of accessible devices and services, taking into account the active participation of this community.
