What will the world be like after the apocalypse?
Eduardo Marisca
After the devastation brought by the Black Death, Humanism and the Renaissance opened the door to a new understanding of what it means to be in the world by means of philosophy, art, architecture, literature and several other fields of knowledge. Today, we have been collectively impacted to a similar extent: Latin America experienced the harshest face of this modern apocalypse, and we have seen how health systems, economies, and political and social structures have collapsed under the weight of this new pest. We are forced to find new ways of being in the world that allow for us to recover from such trauma, and to build the foundations for a new shared prosperity, developed from our own realities. Design can and should play a main role in this process. We can take upon ourselves the challenge of designing brand new models: inclusive, creative and regenerative models. By exploring three design stories from Peru, I would like to pick up lessons on what it means to design from Latin America, and how can that help us face today's challenge, as the region begins to wonder what will the world be like after the Apocalypse?
