UX Writing with gender empathy

Emilia Alegre

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I am a linguist at heart and a UX writer by trade, and so I have no answer to that debate, yet I do have an answer to a similar dilemma: is it our thought that shapes the language we use or is it the language that impacts on our thoughts? I have proof and no doubt that it is language that shapes the way we look at and perceive the world, and when it is not used carefully, it can cause invisibility and discrimination against women or non-binary genders. That is why I would like to talk about UX Writing with gender empathy, my talk having two clearly distinct goals: 1) To raise awareness on the sexism that exists in the Spanish language when it comes to digital content (providing examples of screens, e-mails, error messages, etc.); and 2) To provide tools for inclusive writing (without forcing words into neutral forms, using "@" or "x").

I was born in Córdoba, Argentina and I live my life honoring my last name (Alegre, Spanish for merry). Passionate about English, I graduated as a certified translator, yet since I have been digital content since 2012. In 2018 I got to know the world of UX from the hand of the financial company Naranja, and I fell in love with this discipline. My role as a UX Writer aroused my curiosity for gender empathy and motivated me to share what I was learning on the subject through talks, podcasts and writing. I currently work at Mercado Libre as a UX Content Technical Leader. I have a dog named Fortunato, and I can't imagine life without dulce de leche (milk jam).
