An interdisciplinary approach to design for justice

Santiago de Francisco Vela

The Design for Justice Lab (DJL) is a joint initiative between lawyers, designers, and engineers that integrates design thinking and system dynamics to expand knowledge on access to justice. The Lab is based on five elements (i) Real problem approach. We address real and concrete issues related to access to justice. We work directly with institutions and stakeholders to identify a problem; (ii) a human-centered design approach. We seek to implement a solution based on a Design Thinking methodology that puts people's experiences at the center. In doing so, we seek bottom-up solutions that can be easily replicated as we consider our interventions' cultural and economic constraints; (iii) systems thinking approach. We strive to implement the proposals within their ecosystem and context. The proposals are based on systems thinking to understand the interactions of system actors and contemplate the possible implications they could have at the system level. (iv) An empirical approach. Qualitative data is a crucial component for us. We spend a lot of time observing, analyzing, ideating, experimenting, validating, and iterating, so the users' perspective is a critical element of our learning experience. We learn through failure, and reflecting on it is essential to refining improvements; and (v) interdisciplinary approach. We promote a real conversation between the disciplines of law, design, and engineering.

I am a designer and professor in the School of Design at the University of Los Andes in Bogotá Colombia. I have been working in the field of emotions and positive design fostering emotional experiences and positive behaviours through product design. My areas of interest involve design for wellbeing, financial, social, and legal innovation, and behavioral design. I have collaborated with the Delft Institute of Positive Design. During my academic career, I have coordinated and led multidisciplinary groups, manage projects and led creative processes to generate new ideas. Recently, through my work at the Design for Justice Lab, I have worked on the link between design thinking and access to justice.
